Review: Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race

Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It's very informative for me, as a person who never knew anything about racism in the UK. Yes, I know there was but with no details.
The half of this book is dedicated to telling stories about slavery and racial discrimination against black and brown people in the past. A little boring, I admit. Then, It talks about the present and the fear of a black planet - which was one of my favorite chapters -.
Also, it arises the question of why white people are afraid of racial representation in movies, series and books? The writer pointed at some incidences like a black James Bond and a black Hermione Granger which caused out rages among the fans of James Bond and Harry Potter movies.
Although until the third book of Harry Potter, we didn't know that Hermione was white, it was the default to think of her as one (British=White).
That's one reason why the writer never auditioned for this role. I understand that we love Emma Watson as Hermione but it doesn't have to be the Only Hermione in history. New generations have the right to be represented in the entertainment business and books!
Something like that I feel as a Muslim girl, the default of foreign movies is that characters are Christians, sometimes Jews or atheist but rarely Muslims. It's normal to see Muslims or Arabs as terrorists or cavemen in movies. Some TV series tried to change that by including American women - mostly black or brown- in hijab on the screen like Grey's anatomy, yet there is no storyline for this character, she's just an intern with a head cover and nothing more! This is stupid and is Not representation. I feel Reni when she was mad about this in the book.
It's hard to be treated as a foreigner in your home country, new generations of black and brown people only knew the UK, the US.. etc as their home country!
The feminism question was a good chapter, I enjoyed it.

I just didn't like the narration of the audiobook, it was kind of boring but overall I liked the experience.
